I was born in Greece, the home of olives and grapes. I studied Economics and had a successful career in IT before stumbling across Life Coaching and NLP. Surprise!

Waiting for my husband to come back. He is late. His mobile phone is staring at me, forgotten by its owner.

The irritation is creeping in my body and I am trying to resist it. I don’t want to go there. He forgot his phone and he is probably stuck in traffic. It happens.

A few minutes later, ugly thoughts ‘about how he should find a phone somewhere and let me know he is fine’ are fighting against nice thoughts ‘about how he will come in through the door any moment and get on with our plans for the day’. It is a war of thoughts, that’s what it is; inside my head. Both sides are ferociously trying to win the battle.

Unfortunately, as time progresses, the ugly thoughts get uglier and stronger. Irritation gives place to anger, two hours later anger turns to physical discomfort and rage.

He is finally back. He is here. At that moment, out of nowhere, my mind decides for a ‘surprise’.

A nice one! Nice surprises! Who doesn’t like them?

I give him my widest smile and a tight hug. ‘Sweetie, you forgot your phone. Are you OK?’ He looks surprised and relieved.

‘I am so sorry, we are late for our appointment. I should have called you, had no idea it would take that long.’

I myself feel surprised. I did it. I surprised us both. Just like an unexpected gift or an unplanned romantic dinner, out of the blue. Only this surprise is worth a lot more. Reacting differently than expected for a more positive outcome can be hard to do when negative emotions are around. I close my eyes and enjoy the moment! I think ‘Surprise!’

Then, I get an extra hug and a kiss. All worth it.
